The Potential Park

PARK BOUNDARIES

The potential boundaries are proposed to include publicly owned land within the current Meewasin Valley, which includes trails in and around the Saskatoon area on both sides of the South Saskatchewan River.

GOVERNANCE

There is no defined model for a national urban park in Canada. To determine what will work best for the Saskatoon region, we will learn from our past and chart our future together. The following is a proposed model for caretaking and governance.

Meewasin will maintain its existing governance structure, while establishing a new advisory committee and formalizing a collaborative relationship with Parks Canada to support the National Urban Park.

CANADA'S NATIONAL URBAN PARK PROGRAM

Parks Canada is collaborating with local partners, including First Nation and Métis leaders and organizations, to create a network of national urban parks in Canada’s large urban centers.

The network of national urban parks will involve unique places across Canada, each with its own governance model. Each national urban park's approach to governance will be determined by local circumstances and in collaboration with partners.

The potential national urban park in the Saskatoon region would be governed by the Meewasin Valley Authority Act. There will be no new federal jurisdiction or regulations.

Parks Canada is committed to a collaborative approach and will not expropriate any land to create national urban parks. Private land would only ever be purchased on a willing seller-willing buyer basis.
