The Journey

LEARNING FROM OUR PAST TO DETERMINE OUR FUTURE

A park of Truth and Reconciliation in the Saskatoon region

Meewasin is deeply committed to advancing Truth and Reconciliation with First Nations, Métis and Inuit peoples. As the original stewards of these lands, your guidance is essential to ensure these lands are sustainably cared for to benefit future generations. At the heart of exploring the urban park, we continue to work with Indigenous leaders and community members in a mutually beneficial way.

As we plan for this, we want to hear from you. If you identify as First Nations, Métis or Inuit in this region, your insights and perspectives are invaluable.

A snapshot of our journey here

  • The river valley is the traditional territory to several First Nations and is homeland of the Métis. Members of the Inuit community also call the region home.
  • The 100-Year Conceptual Master Plan for the South Saskatchewan River Environment was created in 1978, with a commitment to honour a unique land, a unique people, balance, and linkages between city and rural areas.
  • In 1979, Saskatchewan established the Meewasin Valley Authority Act to conserve and manage the development of lands within its jurisdiction. We have spent over four decades stewarding the land in the Meewasin Valley, which is situated on Treaty Six Territory and the homeland of the Métis.
  • In August 2021, the federal government announced the creation of a network of national urban parks.
